Remain Self-motivated After a Setback


Remain Self-Motivated: You did it! You finally cracked the code on how to be
self-motivated. It was no small feat, but now you’re done…right? Sorry, your
journey is just beginning. Or, even worse, you may be starting over due to a
setback.
 

Though not easy, getting started is usually the easiest part of
any journey. I have struggled quite a bit throughout my life when it came to
remaining self-motivated.

Facing the beast of depression and the aftermath of a suicide
attempt was a bit of a setback for me (I’m being a wise-ass). I had to dig very
deep and reassess my life. I had to kindle the small flame that somehow still
existed within me.  

After agonizing about something long enough, I would finally
commit. It was usually about a third of the way into my journey where the setback
hit and the mind shitstorm followed. Motivation dwindled and I found myself
perched precariously on the edge.

 

There were times I felt like crumbling and staying down. My mind
was laced with exhaustion, anxiety, apathy, confusion, anger, and even a sense
of entitlement. I learned very quickly that trying did not entitle success.

The great news is that I discovered ways to keep going. If
you’re looking for ways to remain self-motivated after a setback, consider the
following:

  • Be Still and Be Kind to Yourself. The first thing you may do when you experience
    a setback is to get angry with yourself. Self-motivation can become
    self-deprecation in a matter of seconds. Give yourself a designated period of
    self-care, maybe even allow yourself to vent and feel down – temporarily!! Be
    sure to remind yourself of all your accomplishments and qualities.

  • Zoom out. If you’ve gotten this far as a self-motivated individual, for
    some reason (or many), you decided it was not game over when experienced prior
    setbacks. You willed yourself to keep going. Try to remember what or who kept
    you going. Change your interpretation of the setback. Try viewing it as the
    beginning of a new and better chapter in your life, a chapter for you to
    conquer. 


  • Redefine Your Approach. When I was in the hospital, I received a great
    and simple piece of advice. A fellow patient suggested the following: “When
    you are traveling the road of life, you can either step in the shit or go
    around it.” I lost count of the number of times I’ve stepped in it. The point
    is to try and assess what may have contributed to the setback. It may have been
    out of your control, or, it was something for which you could have planned
    better. Was this pile of “setback poo” something you could have avoided? 


  • Spend Time with People Who Make You Feel Good. Whatever you do, don’t hang out with the
    naysayers. Negative people are bloodsuckers who want nothing more than to feed
    off your emotions and turn you into one of them. Don’t let their regrets become
    yours. Only keep company with those who lift you up or at least limit the time
    spent with those who don’t.


  • Reward Yourself at Least Once Daily. I need to be careful with the reward part. I
    could easily reward myself with honey-maple deli ham more than once a day. I
    have enough of those deli counter “take a number” tickets that I could stuff a
    pillow. But seriously, while you’re indulging in self-care, be sure to do at
    least one positive, uplifting thing daily. Hang out with your dog or cat, play
    with them, meditate, engage in a hobby you love or begin a new one, experience
    nature – whatever you deem a reward. 

  • Let the Past be the Past. Don’t allow yourself to ruminate. I used to
    spend hours thinking about my setback and focused on the pain, anger, and
    resentment. All that did was keep me stuck in the mud – and the naysayers
    happy.  

These are the suggestions that work for me. It is my sincere
hope that you will give them a try. You have nothing to lose.

When you have difficulty with self-motivation, it’s not that you lack the capacity to feel motivated. It’s because you are more motivated to do other things, even if that’s to sit still and watch TV!

But motivation is limited, inspiration has an expiry date, so a clear and careful strategy is needed if you’re going to make the most of your motivation.

But the good news is that you can increase your motivation levels by using hypnosis to identify what motivates you and create more motivation deep within your subconscious mind.

How to boost self-motivation with hypnosis

Some people motivate themselves by “away from” strategies like fear (avoidance of pain) and some by “towards” strategies (expectation of gain). What works best for you will depend on your own personal psychology.
