The 11th chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Slesmabhisyanda Pratisedha Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the treatment of Abhisyanda of Kapha Origin.
अथातः श्लेष्माभिष्यन्दप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ||१||
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ||२||
We will now expound Slesmbhisyanda pratisedha – treatment of Abhisyanda (conjunctivitis) produced by Kapha; as revealed by the venerable Dhanvantari.
Kaphaja Abhisyanda – Adhimantha cikitsa
स्यन्दाधिमन्थौ कफजौ प्रवृद्धौ जयेत् सिराणामथ मोक्षणेन |
स्वेदावपीडाञ्जनधूमसेकप्रलेपयोगैः कवलग्रहैश्च ||३||
रूक्षैस्तथाऽऽश्च्योतनसंविधानैस्तथैव रूक्षैः पुटपाकयोगैः |
त्र्यहात्त्र्यहाच्चाप्यपतर्पणान्ते प्रातस्तयोस्तिक्तघृतं प्रशस्तम् ||४||
तदन्नपानं च समाचरेद्धि यच्छ्लेष्मणो नैव करोति वृद्धिम् |५|
Severe cases of Abhisyanda and Adhimantha produced by aggravated kapha should be treated with the below mentioned treatments in their dry form (devoid of fats) –

– siravedha,
– swedana,
– avapida,
– anjana,
– dhuma,
– pariseka,
– lepa,
– kavala graha,
– ascyotana and
– putapaka
Below mentioned interventions are also best suited in the above said cases –
– Apatarpana should be done after every third day,
– Use of Tiktaka Ghrta in the morning and
– Foods and drinks which do not cause increase of Kapha
कुटन्नटास्फोटफणिज्झबिल्वपत्तूरपिल्वर्ककपित्थभङ्गैः ||५||
स्वेदं विदध्यात् अथवाऽनुलेपं बर्हिष्ठशुण्ठीसुरकाष्ठकुष्ठैः |
Pieces of leaves of the below mentioned herbs should be used to provide Svedana to the eye –
– Kutannata,
– Asphota,
– Phaninjja,
– Bilva,
– Pilu,
– Arka and
– Kapittha
Paste of the below mentioned should be used for lepa (application) –
– Barhista (vaaka),
– Sunthi,
– Surakastha (Devadaru) and
– Kustha
सिन्धूत्थहिङ्गुत्रिफलामधूकप्रपौण्डरीकाञ्जनतुत्थताम्रैः ||६||
पिष्टैर्जलेनाञ्जनवर्तयः स्युः पथ्याहरिद्रामधुकाञ्जनैर्वा |
त्रीण्यूषणानि त्रिफला हरिद्रा विडङ्गसारश्च समानि च स्युः ||७||
बर्हिष्ठकुष्ठामरकाष्ठशङ्खपाठामलव्योषमनःशिलाश्च |
पिष्ट्वाऽम्बुना वा कुसुमानि जातिकरञ्जशोभाञ्जनजानि युञ्ज्यात् ||८||
फलं प्रकीर्यादथवाऽपि शिग्रोः पुष्पं च तुल्यं बृहतीद्वयस्य |
रसाञ्जनं सैन्धवचन्दनं च मनःशिलाले लशुनं च तुल्यम् ||९||
पिष्ट्वाऽञ्जनार्थे कफजेषु धीमान् वर्तीर्विदध्यान्नयनामयेषु |१०|
Anjana should be done using the below mentioned things macerated in water –
– Saindhava,
– Hingu,
– Triphala,
– Madhuka,
– Prapaundarika,
– Anjana (srotanjana),
– Tuttha and
– Tamra
Anjana should also be done with the below mentioned group of herbs macerated in water –
– Pathya, Haridra, Madhuka and Anjana (Srotanjana) or
– Equal quantities of Tryusana, Triphala, Haridra, Vidangasara or
– Equal quantities of Barhista (valaka), Kustha, Amarakastha, Devadaru, Sankha, Patha, Amalaka, Vyosha and Manassila or
– Flowers of Jati, Karanja and Sobanjana
Wicks (pills, dragee) are prepared using the below mentioned herbs macerated in water and dried –
– fruits of Prakirya (kantaki Karanja) and Sigru Puspa – equal in quantity or
– two kinds of Brhati, Rasanjana, Candana, Manassila, Ala and Lasuna – equal in quantity
These should be used as Collyrium in all eye diseases produced by Kapha.
Balasagrathita Cikitsa
रोगे बलासग्रथितेऽञ्जनं ज्ञैः कर्तव्यमेतत् सुविशुद्धकाये ||१०||
नीलान् यवान् गव्यपयोऽनुपीतान् शलाकिनः शुष्कतनून् विदह्य |
तथाऽर्जकास्फोतकपित्थबिल्वनिर्गुण्डिजातीकुसुमानि चैव ||११||
तत्क्षारवत्सैन्धवतुत्थरोचनं पक्वं विदध्यादथ लोहनाड्याम् |
एतद्बलासग्रथितेऽञ्जनं स्यादेषोऽनुकल्पस्तु फणिज्झकादौ ||१२||
The patient suffering from Balasagrathita should first be given body purification through administration of virechana and vamana. Following this, the below mentioned Anjana – collyrium should be applied.
Firstly, Nila Yava i.e. unripe barley should be soaked in cow’s milk. Later it should be dried in sunlight and burnt so as to procure its ash.
This ash should be macerated together with the below mentioned ingredients and made into nice powder –
– flowers of Arjaka, Asphota, Kapittha, Bilva, Nirgundi, Jati and
– Saindhava lavana,
– Tuttha and
– Rochana / gorochana
With the help of an iron rod, this should be placed on the swelling of Balasagrathita. The powder of Phanijjaka etc. may also be used in a similar way.
Pistaka Cikitsa
महौषधं मागधिकां च मुस्तां ससैन्धवं यन्मरिचं च शुक्लम् |
तन्मातुलुङ्गस्वरसेन पिष्टं नेत्राञ्जनं पिष्टकमाशु हन्यात् ||१३||
The below mentioned anjana preparation, when applied quickly cures Pistaka.
Ingredients –
– Mahaushadha – shuthi,
– Magadhika – pippali,
– Musta,
– Saindhava and
– Sukla Marica – seeds of Sobhanjana / Shigru
The above said are macerated in the juice of Matulunga and used as collyrium.
फले बृहत्या मगधोद्भवानां निधाय कल्कं फलपाककाले |
स्रोतोजयुक्तं च तदुद्धृतं स्यात्तद्वत्तु पिष्टे विधिरेष चापि ||१४||
वार्ताकशिग्र्विन्द्रसुरापटोलकिराततिक्तामलकीफलेषु |१५|
The fruits of Brhati which are still in the stage of ripening should be collected. Their seeds should be removed. To this, powder of Pippali and Srotonjana is added and their paste is prepared. This paste cures Pistaka when applied
Similarly, the paste of (fruits of) the below mentioned ingredients too shall be used –
– Vartaka,
– Sigru,
– Indrasura / Indravaruni,
– Patola,
– Kiratatikta and
– Amalaki
Praklinna vartma cikitsa
कासीससामुद्ररसाञ्जनानि जात्यास्तथा क्षा(को)रकमेव चापि ||१५||
प्रक्लिन्नवर्त्मन्युपदिश्यते तु योगाञ्जनं तन्मधुनाऽवघृष्टम् |
In Praklinna Vartma disease, the collyrium prepared by macerating the below mentioned ingredients with honey should be applied –
– Kasisa,
– Samudraphena,
– Rasanjana and
– Jati flower buds
This recipe would cure Praklinna Vartma.
नादेयमग्र्यं मरिचं च शुक्लं नेपालजाता च समप्रमाणा ||१६||
समातुलुङ्गद्रव एष योगः कण्डूं निहन्यात् सकृदञ्जनेन |
For quick relief of itching in the eyes, equal parts of the below mentioned ingredients should be macerated in the juice of Matulunga and applied to the eyes as collyrium –
– Nadeya – Srotonjana,
– Sukla Marica – seeds of Sigru,
– Nepala Jata – Manassila
सशृङ्गवेरं सुरदारु मुस्तं सिन्धुप्रभू(सू)तं मुकुलानि जात्याः ||१७||
सुराप्रपिष्टं त्विदमञ्जनं हि कण्ड्वां च शोफे च हितं वदन्ति |
Similarly, the below mentioned collyrium is beneficial in curing itching and swelling.
Ingredients –
– Srngavera,
– Suradaru,
– Musta,
– Sindhuprabhuta – Saindhava,
– Jatimukula – buds of Jati
These are macerated together with Sura (beer) and applied as collyrium.
स्यन्दाधिमन्थक्रममाचरेच्च सर्वेषु चैतेषु सदाऽप्रमत्तः ||१८||
(विशेषतो नावनमेव कार्यं संसर्जनं चापि यथोपदिष्टम् ) ||१९||
The physician should administer all the treatments mentioned and adopted in the contexts of Abhisyanda and Adhimantha in all these diseases without any hesitation. Among all, Navana – errhines and Samsarjana – regimen of diet mentioned to be administered after Sodhana should be adopted in these diseases.
इति सुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते शालाक्यतन्त्रे कफाभिष्यन्दप्रतिषेधो नामैकादशोऽध्यायः ||११||
Thus ends the eleventh chapter by name Kaphabhisyanda Pratisedha in Uttara Sthana of Susruta Samhita.
